Golden Rules of Cleaning
Master a few core principles and cleaning your home becomes faster, easier, and far more effective. After 30 years of professional cleaning across Santa Barbara, our team has distilled the essentials that make all the difference.
Rule #1: Always Work Left to Right
Cleaning from left to right establishes a consistent pattern that guarantees you won't miss any area. Without a system, it's easy to skip a section or clean the same spot twice. Pick a starting point in each room — the left side of the door — and work your way around systematically.
Rule #2: Top to Bottom, Always
Start at the highest point in a room (ceiling fan, top shelves, crown molding) and work your way down to the floor. Dust and debris fall downward — if you vacuum the floor first and then dust the shelves, you'll end up cleaning the floor twice. Let gravity work for you, not against you.
Rule #3: Gather All Supplies Before You Start
Prepare and organize all necessary tools and supplies in a container or caddy that stays with you throughout the cleaning session. Nothing wastes time more than stopping mid-task to find a cloth or the right spray. Having everything at hand keeps you in the zone and maximizes efficiency.
Your cleaning caddy should include:
- Microfiber cloths (separate for different surfaces)
- All-purpose cleaner and glass cleaner
- Scrub brush or toothbrush for grout
- Gloves to protect your hands
- Trash bag for disposing of wipes and paper towels
Rule #4: Always Review Product Labels
Before applying any cleaning product, read the label. Using the wrong product on a surface — marble countertops, hardwood floors, stainless steel — can cause permanent damage. Many cleaning accidents happen because people use a "general cleaner" on a delicate surface.
Rule #5: Let Products Do the Work
Spray your cleaner and then wait. Most cleaning products need 30–60 seconds of contact time to dissolve grease, kill bacteria, and loosen grime. If you wipe immediately, you're doing all the work the chemical was supposed to do. Spray first, move to the next task, then come back and wipe.
Rule #6: Dry Thoroughly
Leaving surfaces wet invites mold, water spots, and streaks. After cleaning any surface — countertops, glass, sinks — dry it with a clean microfiber cloth. This is especially important in the bathroom where moisture creates the perfect environment for mold growth.
